The helpline was established in 1997 and since its set up has a dual role. It addresses to anyone wishing to provide information concerning drug-related crimes, with strict confidentiality and at the same time, it provides preliminary assistance in the form of initial guidance, via the helpline to persons seeking treatment for drug addiction.

The objective of the 24 hour Drug Information and Assistance Helpline “1498” is to provide a confidential service which offers information, support, guidance and referral to therapeutic centers, for all those concerned with any aspect of illicit substance use or misuse. In some cases, callers ask for a personal meeting, so they have the opportunity for an individual counseling support and motivational enhancement.

This is considered to be the biggest achievement of the
telephone line “1498”,since people feel safe to have an
intake session with a Police-Social Intervention
Officer, in order to get help, feeling that the session
is in a context of high confidentiality.
